Sophie E. (Slaby) Sidote

Ware - Sophie E. (Slaby) Sidote, born August 8, 1918, passed away Thursday, May 7, 2020.  She was the wife of Gerald N. Sidote, who died in 1992 and the mother of Ronald Sidote, who died in 1958.

She is survived by her daughter, Geraldine Giannandrea, and her grandson, Thomas Giannandrea; and one sister, Helen Lusczynski of Chicopee, MA.

Born in Ware, where she was a lifelong resident.  She worked for the Ware Knitters until she retired in 1980, after 30 years.  She was an active member of the Golden Agers in Ware.

Sophie was the oldest daughter in a family of 9, and took over parenting her siblings when their mother died at a young age.  When Sophie married, she and Gerald built their home on the family property on Gilbertville Road, where her doors were always open to all.  Sophie was an excellent cook/baker, and always enjoyed sampling new desserts, although her cherry cheesecake was a ‘must have’ for family gatherings.

She was proud of her brothers who served in World War II, and she was a charter member of the Quaboag Auxiliary Unit of the Disabled American Veterans, and served as Commander between 1999 and 2004.

Sophie especially enjoyed holidays, entertaining and spending time with her family.  She was a ‘lucky’ gambler and loved to play cards, bingo and travel to Foxwoods.  She was also a talented seamstress.  Although she had suffered her share of heartbreaks in life, Sophie was a kind, loving and generous woman, with never a disparaging word to say about anyone. She loved people unconditionally, and she loved life wholeheartedly.

The Angels in Heaven are celebrating today because their Angel Sophie has rejoined them.  She was deeply loved by all who were fortunate to know her and she will never be forgotten.

Funeral services are private.  Charbonneau Funeral Home, 30 Pleasant St., in Ware is assisting her family with arrangements.
