Alice Lorraine (Gibbs) Demers

Ware - Alice Lorraine “Nana” (Gibbs) Demers, 98, of Ware passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at Vero Health and Rehabilitation Center in Wilbraham surrounded by her loving family.

Lorraine leaves her daughter, Shirley Socha and her husband David of Ware, her son in-law Ronald Rucki of Ware; her grandchildren, Glenn Baker, Colleen Vallone, Lisa Fleury and her husband Chris, Scott Rucki and Leighann Watts and her husband Tim; her great-grandchildren, Amber, Emily and Travis Floury, Olivia and Lauren Rucki, and Anthony Vallone; her sister, Marlene Beauregard of Ware; many nieces and nephews; and her grand-dog Grady who she called “Baby” and shared her french fries and black licorice with.  She was predeceased by her husband Albert H. Demers; daughter, Nancy Rucki; and three siblings, Blanche Perry, Rita McLanathan, and Francis Gibbs.  Lorraine was born in Gilbertville, daughter of the late Leo W. and Anna (Magnan) Gibbs.

Lorraine worked for the Livermoore family of Church Street as a housekeeper and was a Shoe Tender at the Ware Shoe Company for 15 years, before retiring in 1974.  She travelled the East Coast from Maine to Florida, smashing crabs in Virginia Beach and enjoying lobster and steamers on Cape Cod.  She loved the Caribbean and steel drum bands, Disney and the casino.

She was known to many as “Nana” and loved by all who met her.  She would not want us to be sad, but instead have a “shot” in her honor.  Lorraine’s family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff at Vero for the loving care they provided to her.

A Funeral Mass for Lorraine will be held on Wednesday, February 12, 2020 at 11:00AM in All Saint’s Church, 17 North Street in Ware.  A calling hour will be held immediately prior to the mass from 9:30 to 10:30AM in the Charbonneau Funeral Home, 30 Pleasant Street in Ware.  Burial will be in New Saint William’s Cemetery following mass.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Massachusetts/New Hampshire, 309 Waverly Oaks Road, Waltham, MA 02452 or at www.act.alz.org.
