George Roberts Obituary

Warren - George E. Roberts, 96, of Warren, died on Saturday, July 6, 2019 at his home.

He leaves two sons, Robert D. Roberts of Warren, and Paul Roberts of Spencer; two daughters, Denise Roberts of Brookfield and Lisa Judge of Warren.  He also leaves three brothers, Raymond Roberts and his wife Ruth of Palmer, William “Bud” Roberts of Charlton, and Roy Roberts and his wife Eleanor of West Brookfield. He was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Norma M. (Edwards) Roberts in 2003, as well as his brother, Eugene.  He was born in and grew up in Springfield, son of the late Ernest G. Roberts and Nellie M. (Lynn) Roberts.

George graduated from the Hitchcock Free Academy in Brimfield, and the former Hampden College of Pharmacy in 1950.  He owned and operated Roberts Pharmacy in Warren for 30 years until he retired in 1990.  George was dedicated to his business and his customers.  He was a very kind, thoughtful, and generous man.  He would often go down to the pharmacy during the night when someone needed a prescription filled right away, and would also deliver prescriptions when customers couldn’t get to the pharmacy.

Mr. Roberts was a decorated United States Army Air Force veteran of WWII, where he served in the European Theatre as a ball turret gunner on B24 Liberators.  He was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation, and 6 six battle stars, including a Silver Star and a Bronze Star.

He and Norma lived in West Brimfield for several years before losing their home in the flood of 1955, when they later moved to Warren.  They enjoyed going out dancing on Saturday evenings, and had the reputation of being very good dancers who just glided together.  George also enjoyed reading, playing golf, gardening, walking, and spending time with his brothers. He was a member and past President of the Warren Lions Club, and was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion, and the VFW.
